About

Common Sound is a Boston-based semi-pro a cappella group comprised of post-collegiate singers (and the occasional grad student)
Founded in 2008 by Rebecca Corliss and Shelly Senai, our unique repertoire ranges from Adele to Maroon 5 to Fleet Foxes, and is always expanding. The group performs in the greater Boston area at a variety of venues, and constantly strives to create beautiful music.

Raafi Alidina

Tanya Austin
Soprano, Audition Coordinator, Official Common Sound Pastry Chef
Tanya’s a cappella career began at the tender age of 3 when she brought the house down with a stirring rendition of “Row, Row, Row Your Boat,” (in multi-part harmony!) and has since progressed to include stints with Harvard Law School’s Scales of Justice and the lovely ladies of the Copley Cats. A Boston attorney who dabbles in pastry in her spare time, Tanya currently sings Soprano/Alto with Common Sound.

Harrison Bannett
Tenor
Harrison devotes his time to work, music, and sandwich appreciation, leaving little time to write up a bio.

Sarah Brokaw
Alto
When she’s not singing with Common Sound, Sarah works for a medical software company in Framingham. In her free time, she enjoys reading classic novels, playing the tuba, and attempting to emulate Alton Brown’s culinary prowess. She is a proud alumna of the University of Connecticut and their excellent marching band. This is her first time in an a cappella group, and she loves it!

Judith Garber
Soprano, Music Director
Judith is extremely excited to be singing with Common Sound! A newcomer to Boston, Judith recently moved to the city from New Jersey to pursue a career in publishing. She previously sang with Kol Halayla, Rutgers’ Jewish a cappella group. Besides singing, Judith’s favorite pastime is playing ultimate frisbee.

Noura Khan
Alto
According to Noura’s grandmother, she had started singing even before she began to talk. Noura works as a marketing account coordinator at Thompson, Habib & Denison. She graduated from George Washington University with a major in international affairs. She was a member of the a cappella group GW Geet, and won GW’s Colonial Idol competition. In her spare time she likes cooking, baking, learning new languages, and kayaking.

Eli Lederman
Baritone, Group Director
Eli is a jovial, cheerful gentleman who appreciates a good knee-bop even if it’s not his particular strength. Eli was an original member of the Harvard LowKeys, in which he sang for 4 years as an undergrad and which he also joined for an extremely memorable summer tour to Fairbanks, Alaska a few years after graduation. Eli runs sales at Kinvey, a software start-up in Cambridge, where he collaborates daily with Common Sound’s own Caroline Murphy, who is a nerd. Eli loves playing soccer and ultimate frisbee and is in a passionate and deeply meaningful long-term relationship with nachos.

Brendan McCann
Bass
Brendan is a recent grad from Assumption College where he majored in Mathematics, singing for four years with both the Offbeats and VOCE. An avid sports fan, he currently works as a SQA Engineer for a catastrophe modeling company.

Caroline Murphy
Soprano, Interwebs Czar
Caroline has been singing in front of an audience since before she can remember, to the point where her mother had to institute a “no singing at the dinner table” rule. After college she worked as a music teacher where she learned to play 14 instruments in addition to her primary instrument, violin. More recently, she earned her MBA from Babson, and works in the tech industry and designs games in her spare time. She is a nerd.

Karel Olsson
Soprano, Business Manager
Karel’s love of a cappella began at a young age when her mother started taking her to local shows and subjected her to hours of WERS radio every weekend. Despite several years of teenage rebellion against all things a cappella, the love was reignited when she went off to Wellesley College and sang with the Widows. Karel lives in Brookline and works in Arts Administration.

Rob Orzalli
Baritone
Rob grew up singing with his family as the Navy moved them place to place. On his own now, he is living in Boston and trying to make it the theater world, currently with the professional internship with the Huntington. He is a graduate of Brandeis University, where he sang with Proscenium – a musical theatre a cappella group – and was their music director for three years.

Kara Nelson
Soprano
Kara is pumped to be popping her a cappella cherry with Common Sound. She was a major “groupie” of the a cappella scene in college, much like her high school years as a groupie of the drama club, both times too scared to actually participate. Since graduating from Syracuse University in 2010, she has now accomplished both of these closet interests, and is so excited to finally have musical theatre and a capella rehearsals as after-school activities (Kara is a music and dance teacher by day).
